From bald to bold – the treatment which restores confidence after hair loss

Medical aesthetic practices include all medical treatments that are focused on improving the cosmetic appearance of patients. It is a wonderfully unique and growing business that lies between the beauty industry and cosmetic surgery. However, people may be unaware of the variety of benefits and clientele that medical aesthetic practices offer and attract.

As an example, male baldness has become a prevalent topic in recent research. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), or male pattern baldness, is the most common type of progressive hair loss disorder in men. Statistics from the Cleveland Clinic show that half of the men in the world experience hair loss by 50 and 25% of bald men first see signs of hair loss before 21. Hair loss is undeniably common for men of all ages and can massively impact both self-confidence and body image. One solution is scalp micro-pigmentation. This is an aesthetic medical practice that may give men an opportunity to regain their identity and confidence.

Scalp micro-pigmentation is a cosmetic treatment for hair loss or spots of thinning hair. Ultimately, it is a medical tattoo which uses a needle to deposit small dots of pigment on the scalp to create the appearance of a ‘shaved head of hair’. Lindsey Thornton, a Newcastle-based medical practitioner, offers this service alongside many other medical aesthetic treatments. In a recent interview Lindsey spoke about the effect hair loss has had on some of her patients:

“I’ve treated guys who have had a hair transplant that’s failed, who will always wear a hat, and who have no hairline and it affected their confidence massively. I’ve had them say it has broken up marriages and relationships, they’re obsessed with going bald… they won’t go out, they’ve stopped their sports and everything… it’s terrible what it does to them mentally” - Lindsey Thornton

Hair loss can very easily destroy and misshape a person’s identity. For example, Steve Adair is a guitarist in a heavy metal band who previously had long hair but went completely bald at 27. Steve stated;

‘I hated the fact that it aged me dramatically, it felt like I’d lost my youth and vigour all in one go’

After completing the process of scalp micro-pigmentation and seeing the results Steve described the emotion he felt:

“I was flabbergasted by the results of the first session then amazed at the final result…my confidence was raised dramatically as it made me feel like a new man”

Lindsey has received nothing but positive feedback and reactions from those she has treated and although her client base mostly consists of young adults, she believes that this treatment is becoming increasingly popular in older age groups. Hair transplants, while perhaps offering a service which best replicates hair growth are expensive, time-consuming, and completely unguaranteed. Through the procedure of micro-pigmentation, Lindsey is also able to disguise and camouflage scars left behind by failed hair transplants. Crucially, she can correct scar damage and simultaneously give clients a head of shaved hair – a treatment far better and transformative than what some men have been through.

Undoubtedly, hair loss can negatively affect someone’s self-confidence and well-being with the potential to induce loss of identity and self-worth. Doctor Kassouf states:

“Instead of wasting your money on products that claim to but don’t work, focus your efforts on finding a new style that suits you — with less hair. The best strategy is to embrace your hair loss,” says Dr Kassouf.

Medical scalp micro-pigmentation may be the perfect and affordable solution to hair loss faced by men. Using a subtle method of enhancement it gives authentic-looking results and most importantly can restore self-esteem and confidence.
